The Mamelukes (translated as one who is owned from Arabic) were an ethnically diverse group of slave soldiers, freed slaves and also enslaved mercenaries. They were assigned to high ranking military duties and administrative positions. They were used by a variety of societies, mostly in the Muslim world, dating back to the 800s.
